ABSTRACT

Organic solvents are commonly used in pharmaceutical manufacturing. The extensive use of organic solvents generates hazardous waste, volatile organic compound emissions, increased energy consumption, and an environmental burden. Solvent recovery and recycling are increasingly adopted key strategies to transition from linear to circular solvent use. The purpose of this article is to emphasize the importance of solvent recovery, purification and reuse in the sustainability of pharmaceutical processes. It addresses the working principles and industrial relevance of distillation, membrane-based separation, adsorption, and hybrid recovery systems, as well as green design approaches such as solvent selection, digital process monitoring, Industry 4.0 integration, and artificial intelligence. Solvent recycling reduces raw material consumption, waste treatment costs, and greenhouse gas emissions, supporting ESG objectives and the circular economy. Despite these benefits, capital expenses, regulatory compliance, and solvent validation remain issues. Pharmaceutical solvent recovery promotes resource conservation, environmental responsibility, and industrial sustainability.
